What Causes Hydraulic Cylinder Color Changes?
Surface Coating, Not Structural Change: The shift to black, blue, or purple is usually due to a colored coating forming on the cylinder's surface, rather than a change in the cylinder itself. Typically, the color transitions from blue to purple and eventually to black.
High-Temperature Conditions: High temperatures in the hydraulic system can cause the piston rod to frequently encounter cold environments, particularly in colder seasons, leading to sudden temperature drops.
Improper Hydraulic Oil: Using hydraulic oil not specifically designed for the excavator brand can result in discoloration within a few days after a change. This is due to variations in the quality and performance of extreme pressure anti-wear additives.
Electroplating Issues: Inconsistent temperature control during the electroplating process can lead to surface cracking, which can be observed under magnification as fine, irregular cracks.
Additive Residue: The blue color often results from the oil seal and additives in the hydraulic oil adhering to the cylinder rod at high temperatures, while black discoloration may arise from lead-containing additives in the wear sleeve, typically caused by excessive hydraulic oil temperatures. This phenomenon is most prevalent in the front section of frequently used bucket cylinders. Regular cleaning of the radiator components is recommended to maintain optimal cooling efficiency.
How to Address Hydraulic Cylinder Color Changes:
· Minor Discoloration: If you notice slight blue discoloration, it typically resolves on its own over time and does not require immediate action.
· Severe Discoloration: In cases of significant color change, it may be necessary to replace the oil seals and wear sleeves. Additionally, taking steps to prevent high hydraulic oil temperatures will help restore normal conditions.
