Different Types of Hydraulic Breakers for Excavators

2025 02/20

Hydraulic breakers are one of the most essential attachments for excavators, widely used in applications such as road surface breaking, building demolition, bridge dismantling, and rock crushing in mining operations. Given the diverse tasks hydraulic breakers are used for, it's crucial to understand their types and their specific advantages in different working conditions.

Hydraulic breakers can be categorized based on various standards, and in terms of structural appearance, they are commonly classified into two main types: side type and top type breakers.

1. Distinct Shape

The most obvious difference between side type and top type hydraulic breakers is their appearance. The side type breaker features a triangular-shaped frame, while the top type breaker has a more upright, vertical frame. This structural difference directly impacts their design and functionality in various applications.

2. Range of Operation

Another key difference lies in their working range. Generally, side type hydraulic breakers have a shorter hammer length than top type breakers. The installation point of a top type breaker on the excavator is higher relative to the side type. As a result, the top side breaker offers a larger working range when used for horizontal and trenching applications, reducing the need for excessive movement of the machinery during operation.

3. Construction and Demolition Applications

When it comes to specific construction and demolition tasks, the two types of breakers also have distinct advantages. The side type hydraulic breaker is mounted lower on the excavator arm, allowing it to be lifted more easily during demolition work. This makes it more suitable for tasks where high reach is needed.

On the other hand, top type hydraulic breakers have a stronger direct impact force, which makes them particularly effective for vertical impacts. This feature is particularly advantageous when breaking through harder materials like rocks, where a greater force is required.

4. Other Differences

In addition to the aforementioned differences, there are several other factors that set the two types apart:

Visibility: The top type hydraulic breakers typically provide better visibility for the operator, as the working area is closer and easier to see. This can improve operational efficiency, as the operator can clearly observe the material being worked on.

Proximity to the Equipment: Top type breakers can work effectively at positions closer to the excavator, giving them a greater horizontal working range. In contrast, side type breakers tend to operate further away from the machine, which requires the breaker to be compact and lightweight to maintain the stability of the excavator.
