
The Bagger series began with the Bagger 260 in 1962, followed by the iconic Bagger 288 in 1978. Although Krupp pioneered the series, other German companies, including O&K and MAN-TAKRAF, also contributed to their development. The current record-holder for the world's largest excavator is the Bagger 293, built by TAKRAF in 1995, surpassing its predecessor in both size and performance.
Officially classified as a Bucket-wheel excavator (BWE), this massive machine is often referred to as a strip mining excavator or overburden removal machine. According to the Guinness World Records, Bagger 293 holds the titles for both the largest land vehicle and heaviest land vehicle ever built.

Colossal Dimensions
The sheer scale of the Bagger 288 and 293 is staggering:

Length: 240 meters (almost 2.5 football fields)

Weight: Over 14,000 tons
To support its weight, Bagger 293 moves on 12 massive tracks, each 3.8 meters wide. Thanks to its large surface area, it exerts minimal ground pressure (1.71 kPa), allowing it to travel over gravel, soil, or even grass without leaving deep tracks. Despite its enormous size, it has a turning radius of 100 meters and can climb slopes with a maximum incline of 5°.

Power & Excavation Efficiency
The heart of the Bagger lies in its giant rotating wheel, equipped with 20 buckets, each holding 8.6 cubic meters of material—equivalent to the capacity of 57 bathtubs filled with earth! The wheel is driven by three electric motors, each producing 1,680 kW, giving it a total power output of 5,040 kW (6,600 horsepower)—equivalent to 100 large tractors.
Its daily excavation capacity is equally astonishing:
Soft soil: Up to 300,000 cubic meters
Hard rock or frozen ground: 240,000 cubic meters
To put this in perspective, if this task were done manually, it would take 10,000 workers digging 24 cubic meters per day each. The Bagger single-handedly replaces the labor of tens of thousands of workers while significantly reducing costs.

Costs & Economic Impact
Building such a colossal machine requires significant investment. The Bagger 288, completed in 1978, cost $100 million, an enormous sum at the time. Today, constructing a similar machine would likely exceed $1 billion. Operating costs are also immense—Bagger 293 requires $2 million per day to function. However, the machine’s efficiency makes it highly cost-effective.
Despite its massive scale, only five operators are needed to run the Bagger, highlighting the advanced engineering and automation in German heavy machinery manufacturing.
